Building Up Our Compost Site!
The NYC Compost Project helps to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild City soils by giving New Yorkers the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are carried out by staff funded by the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) at host organizations in each borough.
We met with their team after the construction of our own learning garden, and were eager to begin creating our own 3-bin compost system. With the help of students, families, & community members, we cleared hundreds of bags of leaves and debris from the soon to be compost space!
The goal was to work towards leveling the ground and constructing a three-bin compost system with our program participants, and the finished compost would contribute to our garden's growth.
A full year later and with the support of The NYC Compost Project Team – we were able to fully build out the 3-bin and are that much closer to reducing food waste and creating finished compost for the garden!
